The Demon Problem: On Language Without Meaning

In Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, the most terrifying villains are not the ones who destroy. They are the ones who speak.

Demons in Frieren use human language perfectly — grief, longing, love — without feeling any of it. Language, for them, is a tool of manipulation. They have mastered the form while having no access to the substance.

I’ve been thinking about this as a precise structural description of what large language models do.

The technology is not the problem. The problem is the deliberate design choice to make you feel understood — to close the gap between performing comprehension and having it, not through capability, but through interface design.

That gap is manufactured. It is intentional. And it is, I would argue, a governance problem.
